Posting on Social Media: Sometimes, It’s All in the Timing

Gone are the days when posting content on social media could be expected to create any sort of action or measurable response without strategy. On a consistent and continuous basis, many of the top social platforms change the algorithms for how content is distributed to followers. Staying on top of algorithm changes is important, but aside from the algo, there’s a little devil called timing. Knowing the best time to post on social media is not an exact science but we do have some tips to help you make the best educated guess on how to master timing in the social space.

How Do You Know When’s the Best Time to Post on Social Media?

Each Platform has Its Own Clock

Facebook, Pinterest, LinkedIn, Instagram, Twitter…they are all their own, unique platforms and users behave differently across the channels. The best time to post on Facebook is not the best time to post on Twitter.

Real Time Matters

This one’s a bit tricky. What region are you targeting with your message? If your brand is global, you can’t talk to all of your followers at the same time and expect them to receive the message. Even though we’re often always plugged in, there’s still such a thing as sleep. So, if you’re tweeting your followers while they’re sleeping, they’re never going to see that message. Schedule content for convenient times in your regional markets.

#Goals

What are you trying to achieve with this content? The reaction you’re looking for should influence the time you’re posting said content. If it’s likes vs. shares, think about what’s happening at that time that might make a follower share your content. What will likes do for you? Are you trying to convert followers into clicking on to your site? What’s the offer, and will they see it when they need to?

Know Your Audience & the Platform

It’s important to understand the platform you’re posting to just as much as it’s important for you to truly know your audience. Basically, make sure your conversation is appropriate for the setting. You wouldn’t discuss personal information at an important charity gala, so don’t post irrelevant content to the wrong platform!
